Margens dos Mares – May 8, 9 & 10, São Paulo Brazil at SESC Pinheiros.

Margens dos Mares – May 8, 9 & 10, São Paulo Brazil at SESC Pinheiros.

I’m excited to be musical director for “AS MARGENS DOS MARES”, a project that brings together musicians from  BRASIL, CABO VERDE, GUINÉ-BISSAU, MOÇAMBIQUE and  PORTUGAL.  As an American guitarist, who has had the opportunity to perform all over, I’ve always been fascinated by the diversity and originality that musicians create indigenously, bringing their roots together, and translating them into the modern world.

For three nights at SESC Pinheiros, we will explore the Portuguese language with musicians who have expanded their own musical vocabulary with their amazing careers. The artists we’ve selected powerfully represent the diverse talents from various Portuguese speaking African countries, Portugal and Brazil.

From Portugal, we have singer songwriters, Ana Bacalhau & Sara Tavares. Ana is deeply inspired by the cultural and folkloric traditions of Portuguese music with a modern perspective of her influences.Sara Tavares, a singer, composer and guitarist, combines her second generation Portuguese descent from Cape Verde with African, Portuguese and North American influenced world music, literally representing music from the edges of the seas.

Our African artists include Manecas Costa (Guiné – Bissau),  Mayra Andrade (Cabo Verde)  and Stewart Sukuma   (Moҫambique) –they are singers, song writers and guitarist. Talented, cutting-edge musicians who have a deep understanding of their roots, and the ability to cross cultures in a contemporary fashion.

From Brazil, we are very happy to have with us three fantastic musicians: Ivan Lins, one of Brazil’s most prolific modern-day composers and a celebrated international artist, Céu, who represents a new and exciting generation of singer/songwriters, and has expanded her career to Europe and the US, including working with jazz legend Herbie Hancock; Paulinho Da Costa is the perfect orchestrator of percussion, a  legendary performer who is the embodiment of “AS MARGENS DOS MARES”.

From the edges of their own experience, each of these artists bring their unique singing, playing and songwriting to the sea of talent that is our festival.   We are stimulated to explore with them as we present “AS MARGENS DOS MARES” this coming spring and summer, 2015 in São Paulo Brazil at SESC Pinheiros.
